Originally known as the Murray-Hicks property, named for James R. Hicks, a community organizer and leader. Motivated by racial injustice, Hicks sought to build a strong, unified voice among the local African-American community. In 1883 he petitioned the Loudoun County court judge to recognize the rights of colored citizens to serve as jurors and election judges. He became a founding member and trustee of the Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in Lincoln. In 1890, he helped create a countywide organization to promote racial pride, economic equity, and educational advancement.
