Flooring Solutions, INC of Sterling, Virginia has donated flooring materials to the Lincoln Preservation Foundation’s “Saving Grace” project. The donation valued $8700 will provide building materials for the restoration of the floors and ceiling of the historic Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in Lincoln, Virginia. David Duffy of Turner Construction has partnered with the foundation and asked Flooring Solutions owner Farzi Syed if he would help. Mr. Syed read up on the project and agreed right away. “It just seemed like a good idea,” said Flooring Solutions spokesman Mike Tafaro. LPF president Carol Morris Dukes was ecstatic. “We love this type of donation… It makes this project feel so tangible. We have materials in storage just waiting for the big construction start.” Early this year, members of the Grace Annex United Methodist Church in Purcellville donated all of the original church pews to the project. “Some of them are a little worse for wear, but overall, they are just beautiful”, says Dukes. LPF has been working since 2002 to rescue and restore the abandoned church building located in Lincoln Village in order to preserve its rich history. Founded in 1872 and built in 1885 with the help of the local Quaker community, the Grace Methodist Episcopal Church was one of the first free black churches in Virginia. Around 1950 the structure was abandoned in favor of a new church building in nearby Purcellville where most of the congregation lived. LPF has plans for a black history museum and a venue for community events when the restoration project is complete. |
